Essay #1 Writing from Recall (Narrative), a 2-3 page essay, is based on a significant event in your life. The essay will contain a detailed written account of your experience and make a meaningful inference (a controlling idea) from the details.
A few years ago in the fall, we got the two cutest cats I’ve ever seen. My mom thinks they look like every other cat, but I love them with all my heart and I would never give them up for anything. They’re all grown up and fat now, but I still see them as my cute little kittens. This is about when we got them.
I was having such a nice dream and my bed was so warm. Sure, it was after 10 in the morning and I should have been up hours before, but I felt so relaxed. I curled up deeper into my bed and prepared to fall back asleep.
“Ev! Ev, wake up!” One of my twin brothers screamed at the top of his lungs, making me jolt in surprise.
I groaned and rolled over to look at my door, where my brother, Ryan was standing with a big grin on his face.
“What?” I hissed, distain dripping from my words.
“We got a cat!” He squealed in excitement.
My ears perked. A cat? I thought my parents didn’t think us responsible enough. I wonder what it looks like. I wonder if it’s a normal short hair breed or if it’s something like a Siamese cat. I want to go see it. But I’m so tired.
I heard my family chattering and laughing loudly from downstairs. Ryan called my name once again, now down with my family.
Feeling my pride deflate, I got out of bed with a frown on my face. Dragging my feet across the floor, I slowly made my way downstairs. As I got closer to the bottom floor and my family’s voices got louder, I got more excited to see the cat and went a little faster.
As I walked through the kitchen and into the living room, I saw the tiniest little kitten ever trotting around happily. My heart skipped a beat and I smiled. Despite his size, his eyes were the biggest things I’d ever seen, and were the prettiest color of blue. His fur was striped with the color scheme of chocolate and looked so soft. I wanted to pet him so bad. He must have been just a few weeks old, because he trotted around as if he was still learning to walk. Every few feet he would break out into a run, but then continue walking after a few steps.
“Ev, look! It’s a cat!” Ryan exclaimed, trying to reach out and pet him any time he came within arm’s length. “Look, look! See?”
I looked at them with an eyebrow raised. “Yeah, I can see him. I’m not blind . . .”
“His name is Stan Lee Junior Goslin,” Ryan‘s twin, Daron stated, putting extra enunciation on the ‘Junior.’
I almost gagged at the stupidity of the name, but decided to save it for later. “I’ll just call him Stanley,” I retorted.
As I walked over to an empty spot to sit down, Stanley jumped and got really nervous. I sat down and put my hand out toward him slowly, rubbing my fingers together to try and entice him closer. He cautiously made his way toward my hand. When he finally started smelling my hand, his long whiskers tickled my fingers and I giggled.
Eventually he got bored and started running around the room, exploring his new environment and smelling everything he came close to. A few times he got a little too excited and ran right into the computer desk’s legs, stumbled backward and looked dumbfounded.
We loved having him in the house so much. He was always so playful and friendly. He never bit or scratched us unless by accident when playing. Whenever he would take a nap, we’d sit there and watch him. Most of the time, he’d wake up and try to get out of his bed, but then just fall back asleep in mid-step.
After a few days, he started meowing a lot and he’d be really sad all the time. We didn’t know what was wrong with him. Then we began thinking; maybe he was lonely. Maybe he just wanted another cat to play with at night while we were all sleeping. Maybe he wanted another napping buddy.
My mom said that the people who gave us Stanley didn’t really care what happened to the kittens they had, so they just left them out in the shed with their mom. The mother cat already had many litters of kittens and never fed this litter. Slowly, one by one, the kittens either died off or got eaten by coyotes or other animals. Luckily, there was still one kitten left and we decided we‘d take it.
The moment I saw him, I felt sorry for him and mad at the owners. His eyes were shut with eye boogers and he was curled up in the back of a travel carrier. He was so skinny that I could see his ribs. He looked almost exactly like Stanley, but his fur had more of a gray tint to it.
The drive back home was hard, since I had to hold the kitten firmly, so he wouldn’t run off. He was so bony and frail that I was afraid I’d hurt him. As I held him to my stomach, I watched as his eyes kept bugging out and kept tightening and loosening his claws as if he was going crazy. I tried to pet him to calm him down, but he really didn’t stop clawing and biting until after we got home, where he finally calmed down and fell asleep on my lap. I decided to name him Buyo, after a cat in a TV show.
It was amazing what a week of nutrition could do for a kitten. Stanley was considerably larger than Buyo was, since he had been fed so much.
Stanley didn’t like him that much at first. They would always get into fights and he would always eat Buyo’s food. Eventually he warmed up to him and stopped eating his food. (Which was probably a good thing, since he was starting to get really fat)
Now they’re all grown up and are probably a little too well fed. Ironically, Buyo, who started out stick-skinny, is now even fatter than Stanley. We’ve had some hard times with them, but that’s normal.
I love them so much and can’t imagine what I would do if they died suddenly. I refer to them by “baby” or “kitty” more than I refer to them with their actual names. My life has changed so much, thanks to them and I’m so grateful that we have them. They will always be my little babies.

EDIT: I decided to format it. owo
I was originally going to write this on the time Alyssa and I went to Chandler, but I just could NOT get it out! So I tried a different subject, and I really like how this one came out. owo Let's hope my professor likes it . . .
